Hi Daphne. I am working in an Autism class and I agree that some of the children can get fixated on particular apps very quickly or even just elements of particular apps and games and so they don’t always get the full benefit of the game or activity. Having done this course now however I think I will be more prepared from September and will be more careful about how I use technology to benefit the children.
Conferencing is an important part of assessment for learning at the beginning of the school year for me. I like to undertake a version of ‘My thoughts about School’ with the older children in my class. I also send home a questionnaire for parents/guardians to fill out. Some of the questions would be about how their child communicates, what they are good at, special interests, likes/dislikes in relation to sensory experiences, what they might need help with and strategies that might help to regulate their child. This generally gives us a very good starting place for writing the support plans and looking at targets. I am also considering sending home the Autism Good Feeling Questionnaire by Peter Vermeulen this year, for parents/guardians to fill out if they wish. I came across it at a webinar earlier in the year and it looks like it would give some really good insight into what might motivate the children in my Autism class, and help us adapt the environment and our approaches as best we can to accommodate their needs.
Hi Anna. I agree that teacher observation is a very powerful assessment tool both of and for learning. However, I too have fallen foul of the difficulty in keeping post-it notes safe and secure in what can be a very busy and active classroom. I think I will use a grid something like Fiona suggested too as a means of recording observations and possibly transfer them then to an online file for each child when time permits.
Yes, you are right we won’t be able to use all the websites but Toy Theater looks like a particularly useful one. I like the teacher tools section that can be used with the interactive whiteboard as well as the online games. I was thinking of one of my pupils in particular when I saw the pattern card/tangram activity.
