Grainne,
Yes, the use of a visual schedule to support Leo with his timetable will be a great opportunity to scaffold him to support him to become more independent.

The cosy cave sounds like a lovely idea. It would be very suitable for many schools that are tight in space. All schools should have a sensory space or two as it is neuro-affirming and supportive of diverse needs.

The Zones of Regulation is an excellent programme which is accessible to a wide range of pupils. It is so vital that it is used as a programme across the school to support the pupils to manage their emotions.

The noise cancelling headphones are excellent. I have found that some pupils prefer loops, they are very discreet while also supporting the child by managing their sensory needs.

You have highlighted many key points here. The point on the positive relationship between the child and staff is key. It can be a game breaker. It will ensure we can be that one good adult that needs that support. Katriona O’ Sullivan’s book ‘Poor’ powerfully addresses this.

Staff can scaffold these activities but it is vital that the pupils are given the responsibility to manage the activities.

It is useful to have a basket of fidgets in the classroom to support sensory needs within the class. I have often purchased them through Temu as they are quite cheap and easy to replace if lost/damaged.

The buddy system is excellent. If there is a need for a more supportive buddy system, the ‘Check and Connect programme’ is excellent- it is based on the one good adult.

Really imperative to make the best of the space we have. Some schools find it challenging to kit out a room for a sensory space, a novel idea is the cubbie: Cubbie | The Smart Sensory Pod

Cosmic Kids and GoNoodle are very popular tools to use to support this.
